Posted on 20 May 2024

Good luck to everyone taking exams in this assessment period! Welcome to your student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Look after our campus this spring and summer
As the warmer months approach and the assessment period is in full swing, we encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of our campus. However, it’s crucial that we all do our part to maintain and respect our campus, including respecting wildlife, using designated BBQ areas, disposing of litter properly, and following campus rules.

1. Need to find a study space on campus?

Don’t forget that the Library is open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week during the assessment period and there are lots of different study spaces across campus. Make life easier and download the MyUoY app to see study space availability in real-time and to book spaces in the Library. See the Library tips for getting through exam season, including how to view past exam papers.

2. Study tip: Get a good night's sleep

Research shows there are strong links between sleep, learning and memory - aim for between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Having trouble sleeping? There are lots of things you can do to help yourself. See how to get a good night’s rest and read our other top tips for study and exam success. Look out for YUSU's free Fruit and Root bags to help you get your five a day during the assessment period.

3. Feeling overwhelmed?

Book a one-to-one appointment with a Study Coach to explore your current academic strategies and discover new, personalised ways to enhance your study skills. And, don’t forget, there are lots of people ready to help and support you, including 24/7 support with TalkCampus.

5. University finances update

You may have read that UK funding for higher education continues to be very challenging and, like many other universities, we continue to face increasing costs. Even though tuition fees play a significant role in university finances, it's now widely reported that universities across the country lose £1 billion each year on teaching domestic students and £5 billion on undertaking research. This means we need to find different ways to manage our finances so that we can reinvest in teaching and learning, our student experience and in our research. Read about how we’re responding at York and what this means for our students.
