The University of York and the University of York Students’ Union strongly condemn incidents of hate, racism and the targeting of individuals or groups for their religious, political or cultural beliefs. We understand that the recent disorder in the UK is deeply upsetting and distressing but it has been reassuring to see, in many areas, the local communities working together to repair damage and support each other.
We are a welcoming community built on the values of respect, fairness and compassion and we stand together to offer support for students concerned by these events. There are several ways in which students can report any incidents and receive support, including downloading the SafeZone app for 24/7 access to Campus Safety.
Starting today (12 August), the Library is trialling ‘eco-mode’ for three weeks in order to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. The Morrell building will continue to stay open until midnight to accommodate late-night users but the Fairhurst and Burton buildings will close at 10pm.
If you find it difficult to edit or proofread your own work effectively, this online session on 19 August is for you. Learn different strategies and techniques to help you redraft your written work and also identify and correct errors. See our academic writing skills guide for more information and details on how to book your place.
If you’re moving out of your accommodation, you’ll want to avoid any unnecessary charges.
Wherever you live, please dispose of your rubbish responsibly. The City of York Council has information on how to deal with extra waste over the end of term clear out.
ACTION: IT and Library resource access
If you are completing your programme soon, see the IT student leaver guide for information on when you’ll lose access to your University email account, Library e-sources and the VLE. It’s really important you transfer any files you need before you leave the University and make sure that any accounts set up with your University email address have been transferred to a non-University email address.
ACTION: Library loan returns and fees
If you have any library books on loan, make sure to return them. Any items not returned will be considered lost and may incur a £50 replacement charge.
Things to know this week is produced and distributed by the University's Internal Communications Team. Please email any feedback to university-internal-comms@york.ac.uk.
