UoY community update

Student fee and maintenance loan announcement
Last week, the government announced it will introduce a one year uplift in UK tuition fees and maintenance loans for home undergraduate students in 2025/26, in line with inflation, and has published initial ‘what you need to know’ guidance. Vice-Chancellor, Charlie Jeffery, emailed students earlier today with an update on what this means for both student and University finances.

Feeling ill? Stay at home
In a close-knit community like ours, we must all do what we can to prevent the spread of illness. If you don’t feel well, make sure someone knows but please stay at home in order to reduce the spread of illnesses. Know the symptoms of infectious illnesses such as covid, flu or meningitis and get advice if your symptoms worsen. Find out how to record your sick leave if you're ill during semester time.

Try out the new Burger Kitchen on campus
Launching today, our new Burger Kitchen in Derwent Cafe offers a wide range of delicious options including a Buffalo Crispy Chicken Burger and vegan alternatives such as the plant-based Korean Chicken Burger and much more. Available Monday to Friday between 12pm and 2pm.

1. Win with Unibattle 2024!

It’s time to rally! Unibattle is back—a fierce competition between universities across the country to win the title of 'Money Smartest 2024'. We came a close second last year but, with your help, we can claim the top spot this time. What’s in it for you? By completing personal finance challenges on Blackbullion, you can win awesome daily prizes like AirPods, Stanley cups, an air fryer, and even cash! It only takes a few minutes, and every completed task earns points for us. Find out how to win with Unibattle 2024.

2. Where can a PhD take you?

Ever wondered if a PhD is for you? Come to an online session Where can a PhD take you? on Wednesday (13 November) to explore career paths that a research degree can open up. There will be a diverse panel of speakers from various industries sharing firsthand experiences and insights.

3. Marking Trans Awareness Week

Wednesday 13 to Tuesday 19 November is Trans Awareness Week, and Wednesday 20 November is Trans Day of Remembrance. On Thursday 21 November you can join the city-wide Trans Day of Remembrance vigil at 6pm in the York St John University Chapel.

4. What college activities do you want to see?

Foster your college's unique identity, plan huge events like Winter Formal and host fun activities throughout the year by nominating yourself for a college committee position before 15 November. It’s your chance to be a voice for your college in important conversations.

5. Change of plan? Know your options

There are many occasions when personal circumstances may make it necessary for you to change aspects of your course. If you’re considering this, please talk to your personal supervisor. A number of options are available to you but it’s important to understand all the implications. See our information on changing your plan.
