Posted on 6 February 2023

Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening this week.

UoY community update

Industrial action update
Industrial action is planned for Thursday 9 and Friday 10 February this week. Please go to your teaching and learning as normal, unless you have been specifically told otherwise. See industrial action information for students.

Scams: please be vigilant against unexpected phone calls or emails
We’ve received reports of international students in other institutions being targeted in a scam where a caller claims to be an official and informs the student there are visa-related or other issues and they need to transfer funds to the police for a number of days. Scammers target anyone - please check out current scams we’re aware of and what you can do to protect yourself.

Campus works overnight - Wednesday 8 February
The water supply to around 17 buildings on campus will be off from 11.30pm on Wednesday 8 February until 2am. Check our campus disruption notices for full details.

1. NEW: Housing Hub for your private accommodation questions

The Student Hub and the Baroness Hale Legal Clinic are working together to create our new Housing Hub offering:

  • Wednesdays: Housing contract checking service
  • Thursdays: General private sector accommodation drop-in

Come along if you have questions relating to the terms of a contract before you sign it, if you are experiencing an issue and would like to know which part of your contract can support you, or if you have any other queries about private sector accommodation. Stephen, our Student Housing Adviser, recently took over the UoY Instagram account - see your private sector accommodation questions answered for his responses to your top questions.

2. Race Equality Week: what you can do

The theme for Race Equality Week 2023 is ‘It's Everyone's Business’ - a reminder that tackling race inequality is a shared responsibility for all of us. We're encouraging everyone in our community to come to events, take part in the Race Equality Matters five day challenge and complete the Union Black: Britain’s Black cultures and steps to anti-racism module.

3. Light Up The Night tonight

Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week 2023 events and activities focus on information and support on issues such as stalking, harassment and revenge porn. Find out what you can do if you see sexual harassment taking place, or how to support someone who discloses to you. Join us at Greg's Place at 5pm tonight (Monday 6 February) to ‘Light up the Night’ and walk across campus in a display of solidarity with survivors of sexual violence.

4. Want help to start a business?

Join the Explore Enterprise programme this term for the basics of starting your own business from idea generation to a pitching competition with the chance to win £100.
