Things to know this week - 7 November 2022

Posted on 7 November 2022

Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening across the University this week.

UoY community update

We are working with North Yorkshire Police on their Project Servator initiative which will see an increased police presence on campus on particular days. The aim is to disrupt criminal activity and provide visible reassurance to members of the University community. On a day when we expect the police to join us, the University Security teams will share this information with departments and colleges.

1. Comfortable discussing bills and socialising costs with friends?

Having trouble talking to friends about what is affordable for you? Need to discuss bills with housemates but not sure where to begin? Talking about money can be uncomfortable but research shows that people who talk about money feel less stressed or anxious and more in control, and make better and less risky financial decisions. So to help build your financial confidence, see our Talk Money Week information for tips on starting a money conversation with friends and family.

2. Need funding for a project?

The latest round of YuFund is now open, giving grants to projects run by student clubs and societies, departments and colleges. So what would you make happen? Previous successful projects include funding for a Central Hall Music Society theatre production, as well as new equipment for the SJA First Aid Society, the Sailing and Windsurfing club and YSTV. Application deadline: Friday 18 November 2022. Find out more about the type of activities YuFund can support and apply now.

3. Get free and discounted software

As a student here, you can get lots of different software packages for your own computer either free or at a discount. We subscribe to Office 365 to provide you with a free copy of the MS Office suite, which you can install on up to five different devices. There’s also a range of other software available to you too, including EndNote Online, SPSS, and Maple. Find out free and discounted software you can install.

4. Let’s get moving

Physical activity is not just good for your body, but good for your mind. It doesn’t have to be a big deal - just moving more throughout the day on a regular basis can be effective in lifting your mood, supporting your sleep, and helping you relax. See how you can get moving for free at York.
