UoY community update
Unplug your chargers (and other ways to save energy)
Cutting energy waste is at the top of many people’s agenda and we continue to measure, monitor and lower our energy use on campus. Help us to reduce wastage and lower our carbon emissions by reporting faults with lighting, heating, water or other facilities. We can all make a difference to lower energy wastage on campus with simple, small actions.
1. Support continues over the winter break
Whether you’re leaving York or staying on campus, student support continues over the winter break.
On campus
- See changes to cleaning and reception services, plus information about fault reporting, if you’re staying in campus accommodation over the vacation
- Retail and catering outlet opening times change during the vacation - visit Eat at York opening times to see what is open and when
- See student events or the MyUoY app for college events and other activities taking place over the vacation. You can also check out GSA events.
Academic support
- See information about the Library’s Christmas closure dates
- You can keep up with your reading list via the Library’s e-resources and check out our online skills guides
- Contact the Library any time via the Library chat service
- Academic Skills Community workshops and one-to-one study and coaching appointments continue online over the break
Wellbeing support
- Our usual sources of help and support are still available over the break, though there may be reduced access to some services between Friday 23 December 2022 and Tuesday 3 January 2023
- Get 24/7 wellbeing support from Togetherall
Connecting to campus remotely
You can connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access your filestore and use restricted web apps away from campus, or you can use the Virtual Desktop Service (VDS) to log onto your Uni desktop away from campus, and access your filestore and software. Find out more about working off-campus.
2. Network security update - action may be needed
On Tuesday 29 November, in order to maintain network security, we will be renewing the certificate that ensures your devices securely connect to the University network. You may need to reconnect your devices to the wireless network (eduroam) or to the student wired network. Find out how this may affect your devices connecting to the network.
3. Making university life more accessible
There is a programme of events taking place across the city for York Disability Week. Find out what’s happening for Disability History Month, and check out our new Accessibility web page for resources and information on how we are making all aspects of University life more accessible.
4. Bursaries to fund short LFA language courses
Many bursaries are available to postgraduate students to cover the costs of a short Languages For All course (depending on the availability of places). Application deadline: Monday 9 January. See information on LFA bursary eligibility and apply now.
5. Paid Sustainability Clinic Facilitator roles
Careers and Placements are recruiting a small team of postgraduates to help facilitate a range of Community Projects as part of the second pilot of the Sustainability Clinic. These are part time paid roles starting in Spring Term and running into Summer Term. The role is to help the team of undergraduate volunteers work together to deliver their project. Application deadline: Wednesday 11 January. Find out more and apply for the PG Facilitator role (via Handshake).
