Language support for international students
At the university we support your language development in a range of ways - through general English classes; academic skills sessions and resources highlighting academic language; and conversational and social opportunities for mixing with others.
Before your degree
The International Pathway College (IPC) runs courses for international students who wish to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at the University of York.
We run:
- Pathway programmes, leading to both Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees, for international students who do not meet the direct University entry requirements. These programmes include academic, language and study skills, and are up to a year long.
- 16, 10 or six week English language and study skills courses for international offer-holders, who need to improve their language level.
- Four week preparation courses for international, unconditional offer-holders, to assist them in settling into life in the UK and at York.
During your degree
We have plenty of opportunities to practice your language skills during your time with us, including:
Social practice opportunities
- Languages Café - a fortnightly meet-up to practice and discuss all languages and cultures
- Student events diary & MyUoY app - check out the latest events across campus
- Student societies - join a society, make new friends and practice your English language skills
- College opportunities - your college hosts lots of events throughout the year, ideal to socialise and chat to students from all over the world
- Wentworth Postgraduate College events - our dedicated postgraduate college has a great mixed graduate community and regularly host social events
Other language classes
- Language and culture courses - run by the Department of Language and Linguistic Science, these extracurricular courses run across Semester 1 and 2 for a total of 18 weeks. They're open to everyone who meets the level requirements and can be taken on an extracurricular basis alongside your studies.
