Visitor Visa - study, graduation and family visits

Standard Visitor Visas can be used if you are studying in the UK on a course of six months or less, or by family or friends who wish to visit you while you're studying - for example, to attend graduation.

Study as a visitor

The course must last six months or less and be offered by an accredited provider, such as the University of York. You can study more than one course during your stay and you are not required to hold a place on a course before you arrive.

You will need to prove that you have enough money to cover all reasonable costs of your visit without working or accessing public funds, including the cost of the return or onward journey. You will be able to use someone else's money to prove this if you have a personal or professional relationship with them, and they will provide support to you for the duration of your visit.

Importantly, unlike a Student Visa, you will not be able to work in the UK on a Standard Visitor Visa. This includes unpaid work, so you would not be able to access placements or work experience opportunities during your stay.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

Important changes for short-term study students entering the UK without a visa

All students coming to the UK to study for a period of less than 6 months, who do not ordinarily require a visa in order to do so, must apply for an ETA before they travel from their home country.

Who can apply

The ETA will be made available to all nationalities over the coming months and you must apply now if you are a national of:

  • Bahrain
  • Kuwait
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

For those planning to arrive in the UK from 8 January 2025 onwards, and not from the EU or the EEA, applications for the ETA are now open.

Nationals of EU and EEA countries will be able to apply from March 2025.

You can check the UKVI’s website for the full list of affected countries and when you will be able to apply for an ETA.

Please note that on arrival, you may still need to see a Border Force Officer, as an ETA does not guarantee admission to the UK.

How much it costs

It costs £10 to apply. Everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children. You can apply for other people.

For further information, including how to apply via the UKVI app or online, please visit the UKVI website.
