Module summary

This module allows students to develop their own research-led project applying their knowledge, methods, and skills learned from earlier course modules. The project will be supported through group tutorials and by a supervisor throughout to respond to a question or topic related to your chosen specialist area or particular interest. Students will be encouraged to look outwards (e.g. working with end users, stakeholders or external organisations) to maximise the impact of their work. The final outcome of the module will be a design artefact and a 6,000 word report (written as an ACM journal article).

Module aims

In this module, you will be able to apply your design knowledge, skills, and research methods learned from earlier course modules directly to a problem space related to your chosen specialist area or particular interest. You will be supported by group supervisions and an individual supervisor throughout.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Identify a topic and develop appropriate research questions relevant to the degree specialism.

  • Identify and plan an appropriate research methodology to address the research questions.

  • Gather and critically analyse relevant primary and secondary data.

  • Develop and apply a relevant design approach to address or explore the research question through creative practice.

  • Structure and develop a substantial piece of written work.

Module feedback

You will receive formative feedback from your supervisor during group and individual supervision sessions. You will receive written feedback on coursework assignments in line with standard University turnaround times.
