Module summary

In this module you will enhance your knowledge and understanding of key legal issues - such as intellectual property, copyright and contract law - affect working environments in the creative and cultural industries. You will also learn how to create a financial plan for your business. The module combines theoretical learning with practical application. You will apply problem-based learning to real-life case studies to apply critical thinking and develop your decision-making skills. The module will apply legal frameworks and financial planning to a range of creative and cultural sectors including theatre, music, the visual arts, museums, interactive digital media, TV, and film.

Module aims

This module aims:

  • To increase your knowledge about legal frameworks and finance as they apply to business practices in creative and cultural business environments.
  • To understand the basics of financial planning, investment and risk management as they apply to creative and cultural businesses.
  • To critically assess how laws and regulatory frameworks govern, affect and support organisational and working practices in the creative and cultural industries.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the legal frameworks and regulations as they apply to business practices in creative and cultural business environments.
  • Understand the main principles of financial management and decision-making practices, such as investing, costing, budgeting and risk management of capital investment.
  • Apply and critically evaluate the application of legal regulations and financial management principles to business environments in the creative and cultural industries.

Introduction to law.

The employment relationship

Intellectual and artistic property rights.

Defamation and libel dispute resolution.

Introduction to business structures and accounting systems.

Financial statements.

Financial decisions and investment appraisal.

Budgeting and risk management.

Costing and working capital management.
