Module summary

In this module you will enhance your knowledge and understanding of key legal issues affecting creative and cultural industries working environments - such as intellectual property, copyright and contract law - and you will also learn how to create a financial plan for your business. The module combines theoretical learning with practical application. Students will apply problem-based learning to real-life case studies to apply critical thinking and develop their decision-making skills. The module will apply legal frameworks and financial planning to a range of creative and cultural sectors including: theatre, music, the visual arts, museums, interactive digital media, TV, and film.

Module aims

This module aims:

  • To gain knowledge about legal frameworks and finance as they apply to business practices in creative and cultural business environments.

  • To understand the basics of financial planning, investment and risk management as they apply to creative and cultural businesses.

  • To critically assess how laws and regulatory frameworks govern, affect and support organisational and working practices in the creative and cultural industries

Module learning outcomes

At the end of this module students will be able to

1- Demonstrate knowledge of the legal frameworks and regulations as they apply to business practices in creative and cultural business environments

2- Understand the main principles of financial management and decision-making practices, such as investing, costing, budgeting and risk management of capital investment

3- Apply and critically evaluate the application of legal regulations and financial management principles to business environments in the creative and cultural industries.
