Module summary

This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of leadership, project and organisational management in the creative and cultural industries at a strategic level. You will explore and critically engage with leadership and management approaches, innovation and entrepreneurship. Project work and problem-based learning will allow you to apply leadership and collaborative skills to real-world contexts within creative and cultural organisations. This practical module will give you a comprehensive understanding of the key leadership and employability issues which surround the production of creative content for the arts and cultural industries including film, TV, theatre, music, the visual arts and digital/interactive media.

Module aims

This module aims to:

  • Develop and provide opportunities for the application of detailed knowledge and understanding of leadership, management and project management for the creative and cultural industries at a strategic level within the context of sector change and innovation;
  • Build leadership and teamworking skills through project work and reflexive practice;
  • Develop breadth of knowledge and understanding of the core business models that drive the production of the creative and cultural industries, applied to a range of different business contexts, such as film, TV, theatre, music, the visual arts and digital interactive media;
  • Develop critical engagement with the particular characteristics of strategic leadership and management in the creative and cultural industries.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Apply a detailed knowledge and understanding of strategic leadership, leadership and management approaches, and strategic project management to a range of creative and cultural business contexts, within the context of sector change and innovation;
  • Evaluate leadership and employability issues for the creative and cultural industries, identifying strengths and weaknesses of different approaches and demonstrating a nuanced understanding of the impact of context;
  • Apply an advanced understanding of the core business models that drive the production of the creative and cultural industries to a range of different business contexts, such as film, TV, theatre, music, the visual arts and digital interactive media;
  • Understand and demonstrate personal reflection on different leadership styles and approaches within the context of group work and organisational practice.

Additional assessment information

Students will be able to submit an optional formative essay in week 6. Individual written feedback and class discussion will be provided in a final seminar. Office hours will also be available for additional one-to-one feedback.
