Module aims

The purpose of the Project Proposal is to prepare students for their 30-credit Independent Study Project (ISP), to ensure that students equip themselves with and develop specific academic skills such as designing and structuring a feasible project, scoping the initial literature search, and identifying a solid theoretical foundation as well as a suitable case study.

To achieve these objectives, the module will combine directed private studies in preparation of the student’s project proposal, opportunities for tutor-guided peer review by fellow students, and feedback on progress with fine-tuning the ISP topic.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:

  • reflect on the subject contents covered in previous modules, and to apply elements of this knowledge to the development of their ISP proposal.

  • plan for an ISP and to manage and schedule appropriate stages of the research process.

  • identify and delimit an appropriate research topic.

  • present a defensible draft structure for an ISP.

  • to select, review and critically engage with relevant (theoretical) literature and sources.

  • to summarise the theoretical foundation for an ISP.

  • to communicate the nature and scope of the ISP proposal to an audience of peers and staff.
