This module will provide students with an opportunity to engage in work based learning in support of their career aspirations. It aims to allow students to apply in a professional setting the skills and knowledge that they have developed within the academic aspects of the degree. It aims to develop students’ awareness of their skills and knowledge base through this application. It also aims to enhance their ability to reflect on their experience in a professional setting through structured sessions and coursework.
This work placement module is based around a student placement or opportunity within professional setting. This setting will be in an area where they can effectively apply their knowledge and understanding of psychology for example working with individuals with mental health issues. The course will involve student working a minimum of 60 hours through Spring term in a placement within a professional setting. There will be fortnightly sessions held within the Department (or online) where a member of staff will facilitate reflective discussion on student’s experience. This is preparation for the final piece of coursework that will be an extensive reflective piece based on their experience. The student will also be asked to produce a short review of academic research that is pertinent to the placement context. This will be supervised by a member of academic staff.
While the Department will provide some opportunities for placements, students will be encourage to find their own opportunities. These will be all be vetted by the Department and it will be a requirement for enrolling on the course that students have a suitable opportunity organised.
