This is the Year Abroad (3+1) module for students studying BA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (with Year Abroad), Economics and Politics (with Year Abroad), Philosophy and Politics (with Year Abroad) and Economics and Philosophy (with Year Abroad).

The programme is optional. Students apply to study abroad and transfer into the programme after progression from Stage 2. Students will be selected through the Centre for Global Studies.

Module aims

The 'with year abroad programme' extensions provide students with the opportunity to widen their academic and cultural understanding, learn about different ways of academic study, experience different cultural perspectives, and to study their subject area in another socio-economic context, academic culture, political setting, and where applicable in another language. They will learn about the wide range of different forms of thinking and patterns of belief both in the past and today, and across cultures.

Module learning outcomes

The year abroad will enable students to explore their disciplines from a different perspective and enhance their employment opportunities arising from their International experience. They will:

  • Widen their academic and cultural understanding;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of non-British academic learning; and
  • Learn about different cultures, socio-economic conditions and political processes.

Some students will:

  • Demonstrate increased fluency in a foreign language in both speaking and writing.

Module content

This module is taken as part of the Year Abroad on (3+1) degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, Economics and Politics, Philosophy and Politics, Economics and Philosophy.

For the BAs in Economics and Politics, Philosophy and Politics, and Economics and Philosophy students will take at least one module in each of their subject areas. Students on the BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics will take at least one module in each of their subject areas. Students who take their year abroad in non-English speaking countries are encouraged to take language courses as part of their study abroad credit-load.

Note: There is no reassessment opportunity.

The remainder of the programme of studies will be unaffected by the year abroad. If a student fails to pass the year abroad, they may be able to transfer to the appropriate programme; Philosophy, Politics and Economics, Economics and Politics, Philosophy and Politics, Economics and Philosophy, as the student will have met the requirements to progress from Stage 2 to Stage 3 of that programme at the end of Year 2.
