Module summary

This module is intended to develop the student's understanding of what is required in academic research, and provide support in preparing them for their dissertation. Students must attend regular meetings of the Philosophy Colloquium to experience first hand the presentation by visiting speakers of academic papers and discussion. The module will also give students experience of all aspects of dissemination of philosophical research, including collaboratively organising a conference at which each student will present and defend a paper.

Module aims

This module is intended to develop the student's understanding of what is required in academic research, and provide support in preparing them for their dissertation. Module learning outcomes

By the end of this module students should be able to:

  • Better understand the demands of advanced research in Philosophy, and to engage with work at this level.

  • Have developed their understanding of good practice in philosophical research.

  • Have improved their academic skills and research abilities.

  • Have developed their ability to identify and develop a set of research questions on the basis of critical engagement with a body of literature.

  • Have delivered a conference paper and defended it in discussion.

  • Organise research events collaboratively.

Additional assessment information

Formative Work

  • One short presentation during one of the seminars in Week 4 of Autumn Term.

Summative Work

  • 1,000-word research proposal to be submitted on Monday, Week 1 of Spring Term. (20% of module mark)
  • Reflective journal (5 entries, 1,500-2,000 words overall) to be submitted on Monday, Week 1 of Summer Term. (20% of module mark)
  • Conference presentation, Week 6, Summer Term. (30% of overall module mark)
  • 2,000-word dissertation outline and indicative bibliography to be submitted on Monday, Week 8 of Summer Term. (30% of overall module mark)
