Module aims
Study Music Abroad Semester I and Semester II both involve studying music and/or music and sound recording (and possibly other complementary subjects) at a university abroad. Both modules aim to deepen students' understanding of music / music and sound recording and its cultural contexts through studying in an institutional and cultural context outside the UK. An extra year of study will allow students to develop more advanced musical / sound recording skills, and also provide opportunities for studying complementary subjects if they choose. Some students will take the opportunity to study in a non-English speaking programme, which will improve their linguistic competency. All students who study abroad will improve their intercultural competence.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, it is expected that all students will demonstrate:
- Understanding of the culture of the country in which they are studying
- Knowledge and appreciation of non-British traditions of studying music and/or music and sound recording
- Appreciation of potential challenges and benefits of living and studying in a non-British country
In addition, some students will demonstrate:
- Increased fluency in a foreign language in both speaking and writing

Additional assessment information
Students are expected to take a full-time course of study while abroad and to demonstrate the requisite level of attendance/participation, which will account for 50% of their assessment. The other 50% of assessment is based on their reflection on their experience of living and studying abroad in the 2000-word essay.
Students must sit the assessment for the modules at the partner university, but their grades will not count towards the pass/fail for the year. Students will be assessed at York by submitting a 2000-word essay discussing their experience abroad, marked on a pass/fail basis.
Failure to submit the essays and to sit the assessment for a full credit load will mean that students fail the year abroad. Students who fail the additional year abroad may be allowed to return to York for their third year of studies, but will not graduate ‘with a year abroad’ in their degree title.
