Module summary

In this module, alongside your ongoing practical music-making, you will prepare to develop your own professional career in music-related fields and beyond. You will explore your own decision-making processes around the idea of ‘career’, relate these to your areas of individual practice in music, and investigate how you can communicate your transferable skills to employers.

Module aims

By this stage in your degree, you will be preparing for potential careers as independent creative practitioners. This module supports those goals through weekly seminars focussing on the development of professional skills including entrepreneurship, marketing and outreach, administration and planning, and reflective practice, alongside ongoing instrumental and ensemble tuition. You will be assessed through a pass/fail portfolio demonstrating your ability to plan for your career progression, and to present yourself as innovative creative practitioners in a professional environment.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the taught part of the project you should be able to:

• Work at an advanced level in a relevant field of creative practice (such as solo or ensemble performance, ensemble leadership, improvisation or community work).

• Present yourself as creative practitioners via a curriculum vitae, job application, funding bid and/or other promotional material.

• Reflect on your ideas about career.

• Identify, discuss and illustrate the importance of transferable skills.

• Understand more about yourself and the work environments you might enter.

Additional assessment information

This assessment has two components

1) Reflection on Creative Practice: viva

A 10-15 minute conversation with a staff member reflecting on your creative activity over the previous year, supported by a record of ensemble participation logging your engagement with ensemble rehearsal and performance, and a list of other creative activities you have been involved with. The viva will be structured around a small series of predetermined questions which students will be supplied in advance, with opportunities given to expand on or develop answers as appropriate. Students will need to demonstrate the ability to reflect constructively on their development as creative practitioners and connect this to their career aspirations and immediate future plans.

2) Professional Practice: application

Job or funding application relating to your own creative practice, which may refer back to website materials curated in CaPP II. Students must identify a real graduate-level job or funding opportunity (such as ACE National Lottery Project Grants), for which they will construct a mock application. In either case this assessment will include two parts, both of which students must complete in order to pass

1. Up-to-date curriculum vitae

2. Cover letter for the mock job application, or completed materials for the mock funding bid
