Module summary

Developing your compositional practice through increasingly sophisticated creative work and critical reflection.

Module will run

Occurrence Teaching period
A Semester 2 2023-24

Module aims

The focus of the ‘Creative and Critical Practice’ modules is your individual compositional work. Building on your work in CCP1, in CCP2 you will develop more sophisticated compositions demonstrating a critical, reflective and informed practice. With the support of your supervisor you will set your own artistic goals and create a portfolio of music to achieve these. Regardless of the creative direction you choose, you will deepen your skills of critical reflection, articulating your compositional approach within the context of wider contemporary practice. To cultivate these skills you will actively engage with other compositional practices – of peers and also professionals – through listening and discussion and workshops via the weekly Contemporary Music Research Group seminars and fortnightly ‘Composers’ Club’ seminars. By arrangement, you may also develop work in partnership with students on the MA Performance programmes taking the ‘Collaborative Project’ module.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to:

  • Produce compositions showing increasingly sophisticated and original ideas achieved through both creative and academic exploration.

  • Contextualise and critically assess your practice in increasingly sophisticated ways.

  • Where appropriate, produce notated materials to a professional standard.

  • Engage sophisticatedly with peers and professionals in the discussion of contemporary music in workshop and seminar situations.
