Module aims
Practical Project is run at the beginning of each academic year. It occupies the first five teaching weeks of the Autumn Term (Weeks 2-6), and consists of the preparation and public performance of a piece of music theatre or opera. All first-year undergraduates take part in Practical Project; second and third years may choose it as one of their formally assessed projects. In addition to rehearsing and performing and, in some cases, devising the chosen work, there may be seminars and tutorials on related subjects. Practical Project provides an opportunity for students to take part in a large-scale production and to experience an intensive rehearsal process culminating in a performance in the University's prestigious Concert Series. By taking part in Practical Project, students develop artistic, creative, teamwork, ensemble and management skills, as well as gaining in-depth familiarity with the work that they perform.
Module learning outcomes
On completion of the project, all students should
- have developed vocal and/or instrumental performance to a high-level standard;
- have developed skills in bringing together independent and self-reliant work with contribution to key project groups;
- have developed associated team-working skills;
- have developed skills in approaching new and challenging situations with creativity, imagination and initiative.
Depending on their role, students may have acquired high-level experience in one or a number of the following: conducting, stage direction, dramaturgy, movement direction/choreography, stage design, lighting design, video projection design, rehearsal coaching, stage management, production management and publicity.

Assessment is through practical work (75%) and accompanying written commentary or essay in the region of 2500 words (25%).
