Module aims

This module is only available to those completing the Postgraduate Diploma and so as an alternative to the Dissertation. Students undertake an independently researched project, receiving support, advice and feedback from an advisor as they devise a project. Students will: select, analyze and interpret secondary sources, with an awareness of primary material; develop basic project design skills, including independent working, and project and information management; and develop their powers of analysis and argumentation in writing up draft findings. They will have three supervision meetings to discuss the feasibility of the project and to provide feedback on a draft essay.

Module learning outcomes

  • To carry out independent research, collecting relevant secondary and primary materials

  • To complete a piece of independent research that demonstrates the ability to use and evaluate published sources

  • To present research in accordance with scholarly conventions and to use these in a consistent manner.

Module feedback

Students receive formative feedback on their project proposal and on their evolving plans for the project. They have the opportunity to submit a draft to their advisor for comment.

For the Research Project essay (4000 words), students will receive their provisional mark and written feedback in line with the University's turnaround policy.
