The aim of the module is to help motivated students to learn mathematical topics of their choice, largely on their own.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a depth of understanding of the topic they have studied during the term by use of key techniques and solving of advanced problems in the literature studied

  • Explain key concepts from the topic to the staff member and/or other members of the group, either in writing or orally, or through a combination of both

  • Evidence ability to direct their own study through completion of assessments on topics covered during the term

Module content

Students with an interest in a particular topic should initially approach a suitable member of staff and agree on an area of study. Before submitting the module choice, a 'Proforma for participation' should be completed (available from the office). The students will be expected to proceed largely independently of the staff member in charge in working through material from a set text (possibly a review paper or advanced textbook), and to lead seminars on particular topics.

There may be more than one group of students doing this module with different topics under different supervisors, but each student may take this module only once.
