Module summary

This module is designed for students with beginners to elementary levels in Spanish (CEFR A1-A2l) who want to improve their language and intercultural communication skills in the areas of business and management. It aims to provide students with an understanding of essential business and management principles as well as with the linguistic competence to help them operate and communicate in real-life situations in a range of Spanish-speaking countries.

Class activities will involve the use of interactive teaching methods to develop students’ reading, writing and listening abilities, as well as the application of collaborative learning, problem solving and role-play interactions.

Teaching will run for 8 weeks, two hours per week and is also open to University staff and members of the public.

Related modules

Students should be confident in beginners level Spanish (low CEFR A1 level) to enrol, for example, they may have completed one of our Spanish LFA Level 1 courses or have a low grade or rusty Spanish GCSE.

Module aims

This course is designed for students and professionals who want to develop their Spanish language and intercultural communication skills in the areas of business and management. Through the study of relevant terminology and authentic materials applied to real-life scenarios, students will gain the confidence to successfully navigate a wide range of professional interactions in Spain and Latin American countries.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Use a wide variety of business and management-related terminology, as well as more refined grammatical and syntactical structures in Spanish.

  • Communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information in a wide range of business and professional situations in the Spanish-speaking world, by recognising cultural variations in communication styles.

  • Demonstrate critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills through task-based activities (i.e., role play, group work, presentations, etc.), regardless of language proficiency.

  • Develop a higher degree of intercultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence that will allow them to thrive in an international context.

Module content

Outline of topics:

Week 1. Personal introductions within business situations

Week 2. Culture and work practices in Spain and Latin America

Week 3. Understanding CVs, applications and cover letters

Week 4. Job interviews

Week 5. Participating effectively in meetings

Week 6. Application of IT and Internet terminology

Week 7. Drafting business plans

Week 8. Presenting business proposals

Teaching method
A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on speaking in real-life situations. It will be delivered in small groups with no more than 15 students. There is no final examination.

Teaching activities will be based on flipped teaching practices to provide a more efficient use of the class time promoting active learning and at the same time, supporting individual learning needs of students.

Materials will be provided by the tutor.


Time commitment
In addition to the classes, students will be expected to complete approximately 1 hour of preparatory material (e.g., revision of vocabulary lists or audiovisual materials, reading a case study, etc.) in advance of the classes as well as 1 hour of homework to complete, mainly for consolidation purposes.


Evaluation and certification
There is no formal evaluation but a certificate of attendance might be awarded to participants who complete the course.
