Module summary

The course is aimed at those with a rusty or basic knowledge of the target language. It aims to help you to improve your level of accuracy and confidence in all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

Module aims

The key aim of the course is to enable you to develop your language skills so that you are able to communicate effectively and confidently in the target language in everyday situations. You will then have the basis for continuing your studies at a higher level if you should choose to progress to level 2.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • understand the main points of simple conversations, short radio or TV extracts, and instructions and explanations.
  • read short texts and personal letters.
  • take part in a conversation dealing with familiar topics.
  • explain the plot of a film or book and give information on an event.
  • express an opinion or ambition and give short explanations for these.
  • write a short personal letter or text about familiar subjects.

Module content

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course, with an emphasis on real-life situations. Grammar will be taught in context and general terms. The course is textbook based, please see resources. During the course, your tutor will provide you with extra materials.

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
