Module aims

The course is ideal for those with no previous knowledge of the language, but who wish to acquire basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Japanese. The course will equip you with the basic skills required if you wish to visit Japan or to communicate with native speakers.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • communicate simply but effectively in Japanese at an elementary level
  • understand basic cultural and social aspects of the language
  • talk about yourself and understand when others tell you about themselves and their circumstances, including jobs
  • order food and drinks, understand menus and ask for details of dishes
  • ask for / understand directions, opening times and how to find facilities
  • describe things and shop for what you want, ask the prices in shops
  • talk about everyday life and customs
  • talk about what you have done and will be doing, e.g. holidays, education, jobs
  • invite someone to do something and know how to accept / decline it
  • ask and describe locations of things/ places
  • feel confident about pronouncing Japanese correctly, understanding and making yourself understood by a native speaker at an elementary level
  • write and read short messages accurately using hiragana, katakana and kanji.
  • use everyday verbs in the polite – masu, desu forms.

Module content

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on speaking in real-life situations. 

The course is textbook based, please see resources. During the course, your tutor will provide you with extra materials.

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
