This course is aimed at students with a good basic level of competence in French. Students at this level will have completed their GCSE or equivalent and/ or have some experience of living in a French-speaking country. The course is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

The key aim of the course is to extend your language skills in all skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and improve confidence, with the aim of increasing your ability to understand and communicate in French. Grammar revision will form part of the course to help improve accuracy.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Topics will be introduced and explored with the whole class. Students may then work in groups for part of the class e.g. for oral work. Audio or video listening exercises will take place regularly. Explanations and practice of grammar topics will be a regular part of the course in the form of revision, exercises in class and self-study. The class will be conducted mainly in French and students are encouraged to communicate with the tutor in French as much as possible. The course is textbook based, please see resources. During the course, your tutor will provide you with extra materials.

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.
In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
