This course is aimed at students with some prior knowledge of German, usually GCSE or equivalent. The course is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

The key aim of the course is to enable you to further develop your language in all skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, writing) so that you are able to communicate in German at a good level and understand what people say to you. Particular emphasis will be placed on aural and oral skills, but you will also develop the ability to read and write German at an intermediate level.

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course, with an emphasis on real-life situations. Grammar will be taught in context and general terms. The course is textbook based, please see resources. During the course, your tutor will provide you with extra materials.

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.
In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
