Module summary

This course is aimed at those who have no previous knowledge of Chinese. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

Module aims

The key aim of this course is to equip you with basic skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will acquire a grammatical grounding and recognise basic Chinese characters, which will provide a foundation for further in-depth study.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • communicate in simple terms on familiar topics 
  • understand basic word order in Chinese
  • understand short dialogues/passages in Chinese character on a familiar topic
  • write a short passage on a familiar topic in Pinyin and character

Examples of the topics:

  • introduce yourself 
  • talk about your hobbies e.g. sports, cooking 
  • talk about daily routine 
  • make an invitation   
  • order food and drinks

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
