Module summary

This course is aimed at students with a very high level of competence in French, having completed post-A-Level studies and/ or prolonged stays in a French-speaking country. The course is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as members of staff and the public.

Module aims

The key aim of the course is to enable you to develop your language skills so that you are able to communicate effectively and confidently in the target language in everyday situations.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Obtain information, ideas or opinions from linguistically difficult sources and use them actively
  • Understand a wide range of linguistically difficult sources and/ or regional accents
  • Give information and express your views in an accurate and creative manner both orally and in writing.

Module content

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course, with an emphasis on real-life situations. Grammar will be taught in context and general terms. The course is textbook based, please see resources. During the course, your tutor will provide you with extra materials.

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
