Module summary

The course is aimed at those with no previous knowledge of Italian. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

Module aims

The key aim of the course is to help you develop basic language skills in all four main areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing), so that you are able to communicate in basic Italian and understand what people say to you in a variety of situations.

Module learning outcomes

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • talk about yourself (eg. family, friends, study or work) in simple terms and understand when others tell you about themselves
  • order food and drinks, book a table and understand menus
  • ask the way and understand directions
  • book a hotel room and enquire about facilities
  • make purchases, ask for advice and pay
  • make travel arrangements, buy tickets and check travel options
  • provide basic details about what you have done and plan to do
  • feel confident about pronouncing Italian correctly
  • write a short letter or essay on a familiar topic
  • understand simple passages and written material in Italian

Module content

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on real-life situations. Grammar will be taught in context and general terms. To support your studies, you will need to obtain a textbook (see Reading and resources).

Module feedback

Students will receive feedback on their formative open paper no later than week 3 of term 2. Individual feedback forms convey information on levels of attainment and advice for improvement on each section of the exam: reading comprehension, grammar and writing.

In addition, regular homework tasks provide opportunities for individual ongoing feedback on achievement and progress.
