Module summary
This module, together with SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge A and SQE Functioning Legal Knowledge C, will enable students to develop and apply the functioning legal knowledge required of a competent day one solicitor, as prescribed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and assessed in SQE1, the first part of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination. The module will also provide students with experience of the SQE1 single best answer MCQ assessment format.

Module aims
This module, together with SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge B and SQE Functioning Legal Knowledge C, will enable students to develop and apply the functioning legal knowledge required of a competent day one solicitor, as prescribed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), and assessed in SQE1, the first part of the Solicitors Qualifying Examination. The module will also provide students with experience of the SQE1 single best answer MCQ assessment format during the learning period.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the functioning legal knowledge of a competent newly qualified solicitor
2. Analyse realistic client-based cases, matters, problems and situations to identify relevant legal and ethical issues
3. Critically apply relevant core legal principles and rules to realistic client-based and ethical problems and situations to determine courses of action and provide solutions that meet client needs
4. Identify the processes and procedural steps required to progress legal matters and transactions for individual and business clients
5. Interpret, evaluate and apply the results of research, including practitioner know-how and legal documentation
6. Plan and implement tasks to progress legal matters and transaction for individual and/or business clients
7. Clearly and concisely communicate the outcomes of the above to clients and other professionals

Additional assessment information
Students will receive formative feedback regularly in workshops on their advice to clients, in the context of scenarios of the type that will be the basis of the summative assessment.
The assessment for this module will be on scenarios where the advice required is based on the application of functioning legal knowledge in the areas assessed by the SRA within its FLK1 SQE1 assessment, those being:
Business Law and Practice; Dispute Resolution; Contract; Tort; Legal System; Public Law; Legal Services
In addition, subjects not listed above but which form part of the module syllabus, e.g., Taxation and Professional Conduct, may be assessed in the module assessment.
The areas assessed by the SRA within its FLK2 SQE1 assessment will form the syllabus for the summative assessment, using the same format of assessment, in the co-requisite module SQE1 Functioning Legal Knowledge C

Module feedback
Students will receive feedback on their assessments in the form of their individual mark, together with, given the format of the exam, generic feedback as to the points of advice that should have been provided to the client in each answer. This will be provided within the University turnaround time.
