Module summary

In this module, you will develop your knowledge of film and cinema and how they represent the cultures and societies related to the languages of study. You will learn about events and/or issues of historical, social and cultural importance as they are reflected and constructed in films as a national and/or transnational medium.

You will be introduced to film analysis as well as group project skills which will allow you to analyse critically a number of films and to present a group-based project in response to a real-world opportunity.

You will also further develop your academic writing skills in your language of study, by analysing and presenting a range of sources and materials from a critical perspective. The mediums of instruction are the language of study (French, German, Italian, Spanish) and English.

  • to improve further written and spoken proficiency in their language of study

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should

  • have knowledge and understanding of a number of key films in the respectives languages of study and their social, cultural, political and historical contexts

  • be able to critically analyse, research and compare films and show an advanced understanding of the culture and society in which these films are situated

  • be able to make positive contributions to a group project

  • Be able to research, select, collate and present information on film and cinema to a range of audiences

  • be able to communicate effectively at an advanced level of proficiency in the language of study

Module content

This module is organised in a series of 1 hour long workshops taught in English and a series of 2 hour long seminars taught in the languages of study. The workshops in English cover basic concepts underpinning the analysis of films as representations of society and culture, as well as films providing an outside view of the cultures and societies related to the languages of study. Students will work together in groups on a project which aims to promote knowledge and understanding of film and cinema to a wider audience. The seminars in the languages of study, will cover a number of films relating to three major themes relevant to the respective national and transnational contexts. Students will engage in critical analysis of cultural and social issues and their filmic representations, and further develop their ability to communicate their knowledge and expertise according to norms and conventions of academic discourse in the respective languages of study.
