Module summary

This core module will provide you with the opportunity to consolidate everything you have learned throughout the year, and to begin applying it in a professional context. You will receive advanced language enhancement in each of your language directions and will apply your learning in individual and group work. You will also acquire key knowledge and employability skills which will help you successfully enter the language services industry upon graduation. In support of these goals, you are encouraged to seek out and incorporate volunteer work and/or placement opportunities into your learning journey. The module will culminate in all students organising and participating in a large mock summit spanning two days. This will involve students across all languages and specialisms.

Module aims

This module is designed to facilitate the transition between academic study and professional practice. This is achieved through a combination of:

  • advanced language enhancement geared towards specific sectors in which language professionals often work,
  • business-/industry-related seminars,
  • volunteer work and/or placement,
  • collaboration with students across all languages on a large multilingual project,
  • continued translation/interpreting practice.

Module learning outcomes

After completing this module, you should be able to:

  • apply very high-level language skills to their professional practice,
  • conduct research and self-learning in specialist areas of the language services industry,
  • plan and successfully deliver a large multilingual project,
  • effectively develop a professional network within the industry,
  • demonstrate the key skills and knowledge necessary to seamlessly enter the language services industry.

Module content

A high degree of flexibility is built into this module by nature. An illustrative list of topics is below:

  • language enhancement seminars for each language direction,
  • industry-focused seminars,
  • employability skills,
  • planning, delivering and participating in a large multilingual mock summit.
