Module aims

  • to deepen understanding of current theory and research directions in selected areas of psycholinguistics by means of reading and discussion of primary research papers. Papers will focus on four of the following topics:
    • Speech perception, comprehension, and production
    • Speech errors
    • Lexical Access
    • Morphological Processing
    • Syntactic Processing
    • Discourse Processing
    • Experimental methods in psycholinguistics
    • Language acquisition and breakdown
    • Language in the brain
  • to enhance skills in understanding the technical sides of psycholinguistic research papers, including detail of research methods and statistical reporting.
  • to develop critical reading and evaluation skills as applied to psycholinguistic research, and the ability to communicate psycholinguistic research content

Module learning outcomes

  • enhanced understanding of psycholinguistic theory and current research directions
  • enhanced confidence in relation to understanding of technical aspects of psycholinguistic research
  • experience of communicating psycholinguistic research content

Formative work includes submission of questions relating to the assigned readings before each seminar, and preparation of at least one presentation on one of the assigned readings over the course of the module.
