Module aims
This module aims to:
increase students' awareness of the key aspects of French society and culture through the medium of film,
explore the place of cinema ('le 7e art') in French society and culture,
introduce students to basic concepts of film analysis, and,
develop students' communicative skills in written and spoken French.
In this module, students will closely study a series of key films. Possible topics might include: gender and sexuality, youth culture, protest culture, worklife, Paris and the province etc. Their discussions of these films will also be framed by an analysis of appropriate primary and secondary materials including articles, speeches, interviews, photographs etc.
Module learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should:
be familiar with a number of French films and the cultural context they were produced in and/or the social, cultural historical context they refer to
have an increased understanding of French social, cultural and historical issues
be able to analyse, research and compare French films
develop a good level of accuracy in the production of both the written and spoken forms of French
improve their fluency and communicative skills in French.

Module feedback
Feedback on formative work
Oral commentary and dialogue within class on oral and written language work. Given immediately both to individuals and to group.
Written comments and mark on the University scale given to individual students for practice essays, with opportunity for individual consultation; the essays will be returned to students two weeks after seminar
Summative assessment and feedback
Written feedback to be provided within 20 working days.
