The dissertation is the largest piece of autonomous work undertaken by each student, demonstrating mastery of a wide range of intellectual, theoretical, methodological and technical skills, resulting in an original contribution to scholarship and practice in the field of stained glass conservation.

The dissertation is expected to demonstrate:
The student’s command of a suitable conservation subject, or art-historical topic with a strong conservation emphasis
The student’s ability to conduct significant, sustained and original research
The student’s ability to organise and engage critically with both primary and secondary sources
Intellectual independence
An ability to present work with scholarly professionalism
By completion of the dissertation, the student should be able to:
Present an original piece of research in a compelling and persuasive manner
Organise and manage a piece of self-directed research which may involve interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary skills
Demonstrate competence in writing and professionalism in use of scholarly conventions
