To provide supportive, supernumerary practice learning opportunities that enable students to participate in care:
understand the role and scope of the midwife working within maternity care services, including interdisciplinary and multi agency working
develop the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to provide universal midwifery care and additional care for women and newborn infants and families with complications.
promote and provide continuity of care and carer
professionally develop towards meeting the midwifery skills outlined within the NMC (2019) Standards of proficiency for midwives and the learning outcomes within the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) Standards.
have the opportunity to carry a midwifery caseload to enable them to develop leadership and management skills within contemporary midwifery, maternity and health care.
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate progression towards the identified proficiencies for Stage three in the eMORA.
Able to demonstrate proficiency with appropriate supervision, all relevant proficiencies identified in the eMORA document.
Achieve UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) themes and learning outcomes as specified for Stage Three/in the eMORA.
Demonstrate proficiency with drug calculations, using Safe-Medicate.
Carry a midwifery caseload with appropriate supervision.

Note: Practice learning equates to 50% of the overall BMid (Hons) programme and a minimum of 2,300 practice learning hours will be evidenced over the three years. It is anticipated that students will achieve 800 practice learning hours in this module. A practice learning week will total 40 hours, comprising 37.5 clinical hours verified by an NMC registrant and a maximum of 2.5 hours of reflective activity verified by a practice supervisor or practice assessor.
