Module summary
This field trip will provide students with an understanding of the natural anthropogenic challenges faced by the island of Tenerife. The module will provide students with first-hand experience of the process of gathering original data via field sampling, assessment techniques, and application of analytical tools. These skills are vital in order to become competent with assessing, understanding and dealing with environmental problems.
All accommodation, travel and food are paid for in Tenerife. Students are expected to pay for their own airline tickets in advance to travel from the UK to Tenerife and then reclaim this cost from the department. The department will reimburse airfare costs up to a predetermined level based on the typical cost of standard class flights from a wide range of regional airports, bought well in advance of the date of travel. In 2017-18 flight costs were reimbursed up to a cost of £175.

Module aims
This field trip will provide students with an understanding of the natural anthropogenic challenges faced by the island of Tenerife. The module will provide students with first-hand experience of the process of gathering original data via field sampling, assessment techniques, and application of analytical tools. These skills are vital in order to become competent with assessing, understanding and dealing with environmental problems.
The module will provide a firm foundation for the third year dissertation or MEnv dissertations and teach students how to obtain and utilise information from primary and secondary sources. The course will enable the development of analytical, problem solving and team working skills, as well as allowing the application of related theoretical knowledge and developing scientific presentation skills.
Module learning outcomes
On completion of this module, a capable student will be able to do the following:
- demonstrate an understanding of the different pressures (man-made and natural) experienced by Tenerife as well as an understanding of how these are currently managed and how they are interlinked;
- design an independent research project and develop associated hypotheses;
- employ appropriate methods of experimental design, data collection and analysis;
- undertake group research in their own time, referring to primary and secondary sources;
- work effectively as a project team and to deal with any conflicts that might develop in a team working situation
- synthesise and analyse novel datasets;
- critique research results and understand good practice for the delivery of research projects;
clearly present the results of their research in a scientific conference type situation.
