Module aims

Spending a year in industry will give students a valuable insight into the world of work, develop employability skills and increase their potential for employment. This module involves students spending 9 - 12 months working in an industrial setting and is completed after their stage 2 teaching. The year in industry placement will provide work experience that complements the students degree. Year in industry placements are paid at a rate typical to the sector. The student will benefit from being an employee of the year in industry placement provider whilst still being a student of the University of York. This arrangement will allow students to maintain links with and gain support from the University and the Department of Environment and Geography whilst on the year in industry. The students’ year in industry supervisor will maintain regular contact with the student and carry out a site visit within the first few months of the placement.

Taking a year out in industry has many benefits, including hands-on experience of working in an applied setting, and more generic skills, such as teamwork and time management – invaluable for the remainder of the degree and attractive to prospective employers and PhD supervisors.
