The module is intended to introduce students to the distinctive disciplinary perspectives that have been used to explore the meaning and purpose of education. These include philosophical, sociological, psychological, historical, political, and economic perspectives. An intended outcome is an understanding that the concept of education has been addressed from various different disciplines, each with its own particular approach and literature and each of which offers unique insights.

Political and economic influences.
Historical developments.
Social theory.
