Module aims

The aim of the dissertation is to give students the opportunity to apply the concepts and technical skills they have learnt during the taught component of the MSc in Health Economics to a practical research project.

Examples include:

  • Conducting a literature search and reviewing relevant literature (this may include systematic reviews).

  • Conducting an empirical analysis, including compiling, checking and using datasets for empirical (regression) analyses, estimation and interpretation of micro-econometric models.

  • Conducting a cost effectiveness analysis, including building a decision tree.

The research is documented in a 8-10,000 word dissertation.

The dissertation is conducted in the form of a placement (three months). Placements are offered in academic research units, health care organisations, international organisations, consultancy and pharmaceutical companies. The majority of hosts are based in the UK but many of the placements are overseas

Module learning outcomes

Critically evaluate theoretical and/or empirical economic models and independently apply and critically analyse relevant concepts and principles.

Critically assess key concepts using deductive and inductive methods involving theoretical and/or empirical economic models learnt in core and option modules.

The proficient application of various quantitative techniques to formulate problems and provide convincing analysis of meaningful problems in economics.

Read, understand and digest various journal articles, gathering and implementing knowledge pertaining to the development of theoretical and econometric models, applying methodology learnt during module and dissertation lectures.
