Module aims

The module aims to:

  • Present students with a wide range of poetry forms that they will explore through close reading in order to inform and enhance their own poetry writing
  • Guide students through studies of traditional and contemporary poetry; through fixed form and free verse
  • Develop the skills, techniques and understanding required to enable them to express themselves imaginatively and with precision
  • Encourage the idea of accessibility of poetry to be owned and enjoyed
  • Reinforce the idea that poetry is a spoken art
  • Develop students' abilities to critically evaluate their own writing and that of their fellow students
  • Lead students to redraft and revise their work
  • Guide students toward presenting their work in a professional manner.

Module learning outcomes

At the conclusion of the module the student should have:

  • Furthered their understanding of the main characteristics of poetic writing in particular to:
    • Grasping rhyme and rhythm
    • Realising the importance of imagery
    • Understanding a range of the poetic devices used to craft well written poems.
  • Explored and written a range of poetic forms and understood their main elements.
  • Begun to develop their personal style and voice.
  • Demonstrated an ability to write poetry that is credible and original.
  • Read widely the work of established poets.
  • Furthered their critical faculties and improved their editing skills.

Module feedback

The tutor will give regular individual verbal and written feedback throughout the module on work submitted.
