The module gives students skills, knowledge and understanding relevant to pursuing masters level training in evolutionary biology, and skills relevant to wide variety of careers in and outside of biology, in the context of ongoing research programmes and primary research literature in evolutionary biology.

The module will provide an overview of current research questions, methods and analyses across the breadth of modern evolutionary biology. It will cover, in depth, evolutionary processes and outcomes from the level of DNA sequences to global patterns of biodiversity. Material will be taught by a thorough exploration of current research methods and recent high profile publications, and consolidated through workshops and computer practicals.
1. Evaluate the factors determining rates and patterns of molecular evolution, and variation in phenotypes and species richness
2. Evaluate the evolutionary consequences of interactions between population ecology and genetics, and the genetic consequences of population/species interactions.
3. Design novel investigations in evolution in the context of the above topics
4. Critique and interpret current research papers on evolution in the context of the above topics.

Cohort-level feedback will be provided on performance in closed exams and made available via the VLE. Histograms of module marks will be posted on the notice boards outside the Biology Student Services office. Individual marks will be made available to you and your supervisor via e:vision. Exam scripts will be made available at the end of either the Spring or Summer terms. You should take the opportunity to discuss your marks and feedback with your supervisor.
During the teaching of the module you will receive feedback that may be at a whole class or individual level. Forms of feedback may include: model answers and discussion of workshop questions, summaries of performance in practicals, VLE-based quizzes, individual spoken comments during workshops, individual written comments on formative work.
