Module summary

This module will provide you with the opportunity to undertake an extended placement using 3 different models: (1) on site/with the placement provider (2) based on a brief from a partner organisation or (3) with a staff member/projects within the Department. Your placement will be organised with your interests in mind and, depending on your programme, may focus on:

  • Curatorial, museum learning or collections management tasks
  • Cultural heritage activities
  • Conservation / Heritage Planning
  • Developing digital resources and archives
  • Fieldwork activities

You will be assigned an academic supervisor, and where applicable a supervisor from the external organisation, to support you in your work.

Module aims

This module aims:

  • To gain experience of working on a project in a professional environment.
  • To critically reflect on the organisational structure and management of professional practices and research project (as appropriate)
  • To produce a piece of work for your professional portfolio.

Module learning outcomes

By the end of the module the students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate self-direction, originality and good communication in tackling and solving problems within a professional environment.
  • Critically evaluate the complexities and constraints professionals must navigate in order to apply relevant principles in practice.
  • Demonstrate a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of one or more professional roles within the sector.
  • Reflect critically on their own practice and draw on experiences to inform learning and professional development.

Module content

You will be assigned an academic supervisor, and where applicable a supervisor from the external organisation, to support you in your work. You will have the opportunity to reflect on your learning together with other students undertaking placements. You will produce a piece of work for your placement provider that you can use as part of your developing professional portfolio.
