Professor Dame Margaret Whitehead
Professor Dame Margaret Whitehead is a Professor in Public Health.
A graduate of the University of York, she studied Biology soon after the founding of the University. Her interest shifted from cells to society, with a particular focus on how poverty, living and working conditions influence health. She was the first woman to hold the W H Duncan Chair of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. Here, she was also founding Head of
the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Policy Research on the Determinants of Health Equity. She has helped provide guidance for countries across Europe on making population health policies more equitable. In 2016, she was honoured with a Damehood for her contribution to tackling inequalities in health.
