Wentworth College Nucleus

Posted on 15 July 2024

As part of our estate changes, Wentworth College Nucleus is being closed and mothballed, but rest assured, Wentworth will continue to operate as one of our eleven colleges and this closure will not affect accommodation.

As you may be aware, the University has been developing a plan aimed at reducing energy use and the carbon emissions of the University estate. We want to focus on using our buildings more effectively, by spending time in the better buildings, and moving out of our older ones that are expensive to maintain and run.

Wentworth College Nucleus has been identified as a key building that is causing us significant problems - both in terms of high operating costs and being really ineffective to run. Parts of it are increasingly unusable and large portions of it are already closed to staff and student use.

After much consideration, the University Executive Board (UEB) has decided to relocate student facilities and offices from Wentworth to space in the Biology department, creating a dedicated Wentworth Graduate College space within.

We are working towards a plan of the end of September 2024 for the building closure, but we will be communicating further as this progresses. It is important to note that Wentworth will continue to operate as one of our eleven colleges and this closure will not affect accommodation.

Some changes include:

  • Wentworth College staff will be relocated to the new Wentworth Graduate College space in Biology, and will continue to support our students and deliver college services.
  • Societies who use Wentworth College Nucleus are being consulted regarding suitable new spaces to use.
  • The Wentworth launderette will remain open and fully accessible.

We understand that this closure will impact students who currently use the building, and we would like to thank everyone involved for their continued cooperation as we make this significant step towards a more efficient and sustainable estate.
