Energy Action Week

Posted on 19 November 2024

Running from Monday 25 November to Sunday 1 December, all students can take part in the activities and help to save energy, whether you live on campus or in other accommodation.

This year all Colleges are taking part in the College Sustainability Challenge. The Challenge is a competition between all Colleges, incorporating Energy Action Week, a week dedicated to making energy savings.

You can enter competitions, join masterclasses, learn top tips, and take part in a survey to identify energy-saving actions. A winner will be chosen for each competition and all winners will walk away with a £25 voucher!

Competition: Which appliances use the most energy at home?

Competition: What is the ideal home temperature range?

You don’t have to get the questions right – just give them a go!

Masterclass: Exploring Electricity – find out more about how the electricity we use impacts our planet, how a changing climate will affect our electricity use and generation, and what we can do to help.

You can also take the survey to identify where you can save energy at home!

Finally, here are our top energy saving tips:

  • Switch off lights and appliances - switching off at the socket is a great way to prevent energy wastage!
  • Put on full loads of washing - did you know washing machines and tumble dryers use a lot of energy and water? Putting on fuller loads rather than lots of small loads, and washing at 30°C will help them to last longer and save energy.
  • Only boil what you need - kettles are energy intensive, so just boil as much water as you need instead of a full kettle. 200 ml is the ideal amount of water for a single hot drink.

We are also looking at ways to cut energy consumption University-wide through our Small Change, Big Impact campaign. Why not take a look at some practical suggestions on what you can do to lower energy wastage on campus

The College Sustainability Challenge provides advice to help you live more sustainably, with regular competitions and free training and online resources. If you’re not already involved in the challenge then why not take a look at how you can take part.
