Money mules: how to avoid the trap

Posted on 31 August 2023

Earning extra money for doing very little sounds attractive – right?

Did you know?

  • UK Finance revealed the number of 14- to 18-year-olds ‘misusing’ their bank account rose by 73% in the last two years.
  • Last year 43% of mule cases identified by Barclays were individuals under the age of 25.

The promise and offer of easy money with no strings attached would lure many people in. But what’s the catch? If you allow large sums of money to pass through your bank account and move it on to someone else, you become a money mule and you’re committing a serious criminal offence. Criminals rely on people to disguise the origins of their dirty money so it’s more difficult for the police to trace.

Join the Barclays Bank Mules team for an online event to learn from their experts about the size of the problem, how people are being targeted and what you can do to help protect yourself.
