City of York launched an e-scooter and e-cycle trial in late 2020 and the university was offered a temporary ‘freezone trial’. This meant that all rentals starting at Campus East and the Spring Lane Building have since been free of charge. Initially assumed to last only 12 months, both the E-scooter and E-cycle freezone trials have been extended twice.
We have been informed by TIER, the sustainable travel company who work in partnership with the City of York Council, that the freezone trial will be coming to an end on 1 July 2022. The ongoing trial of the E-scooters and E-cycles across the city is set to continue with no end date currently planned, meaning they will still be available to use to, from and between campuses.
We understand that many of our staff and students will be disappointed by this news, but we hope that this does not discourage the use of the E-scooters and E-cycles while they remain in York (hopefully for the foreseeable future!); as they remain one of the most sustainable and efficient ways of travelling between the two campuses.
Staff and students are eligible for a discount on TIER rentals over the summer months. This discount can be retrieved by emailing yorksupport@tier.app between June and September 2022.
Additionally, TIER will be providing a discount for Student Return in September 2022 - keep a lookout for them in Term 1/Fresher’s week!
The UB1 bus route is a dedicated free of charge campus shuttle, incorporating Halifax College and the Grimston Bar Park and Ride. Bus routes 66 and 67 also incorporate intercampus travel in their route within the Free Zone. Simply let the driver know where you are going and show your staff or student ID card to travel for free in these areas.
