Your work: safe and at your fingertips

Posted on 11 October 2020

Don’t take the risk - it’s important that you make sure that your work - whether it’s lecture notes, survey data, essays or research - is safe and accessible.

Backups

Work that is only stored in one place (eg on a USB stick, or on the hard drive of your laptop) is at risk of being corrupted or lost. If you open a document from an email and edit it without saving it to your filestore, it may be lost when you log off. We strongly recommend that you use one of the centrally provided services to save your work.

Filestore: as part of your IT account, you have your own personal filestore. If you log on to a managed campus machine, it’s already mapped, but you can also set up access from your own devices.

Google Drive: as a member of the University, you have access to Google Drive which gives you the ability to store files in the cloud and access them from a wide variety of devices.

Access anywhere

We’ve made it easy for you to access your work, wherever you are.

  • Save your work to Google Drive so that you can access it anywhere on any device connected to the internet.
  • Use our Virtual Desktop Service (VDS) to log on to your desktop from home, with access to software and your filestore.
  • Log onto the Virtual Private Network (VPN) to map your filestore and access restricted web apps.
